Jazz Upstairs at The B

Jazz artist and Sacramento-based multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and educator Jacam Manricks has received global recognition for his musical accomplishments to date. He is a much respected figure in the international jazz scene and for 13 years prior to moving to Sacramento tenured with the best in his field in New York City. He has published twelve internationally acclaimed album releases, lead sixteen international promotional tours, and was one of the first to graduate with a Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree from the Manhattan School of Music, majoring in jazz composition, performance and education (2007).

Manricks has made a significant impact on the Sacramento creative music scene since moving here in 2014. He has released 7 nationally acclaimed recordings (Chamber Jazz, GilManricks, Music Shop, Christmas Card Vol 1&2, Samadhi & Improvisatory) and presented over one hundred local concerts as a leader, also performing countless others as a sideman. He has enhanced the music education community by directing jazz bands at UC Davis from 2014-2019, offering free workshops at Tim’s Music in Carmichael, performing guest master classes at American River College and the Brubeck Institute-UOP, and running big bands, jazz theory, improvisation and arranging at CSUS. Manricks has also featured on Capital Public Radio numerous times (Beth Ruyak’s Insight and Gary Vercelli’s Excellence in Jazz) showcasing local Sacramento talent and promoting the live music scene here.

Jacam’s music showcases his deep musical talent and comprehensive training. While his compositions and recordings often center on jazz ensembles, his range spans from solo saxophone performances to symphony orchestras with big bands. He skillfully blends the influence of jazz legends like Duke Ellington with classical composers such as Arnold Schoenberg, incorporating electronics and MIDI to create a sound that embodies the spirit of the present. Jazz Times Magazine says “Labyrinth (2009) is a piece of work that does for jazz what author Walt Whitman did for existentialism. He gives the genre meaning that people can relate to and apply to their own lives."

For the 11/14 concert, Manricks will premiere new compositions along with some songs from his album Samadhi. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear Manricks new music live, right here in Sacto!
